2016 Domaine Maestracci Corse Calvi Rouge E Prove

This Corse Calve red wine comes from the island of Corsica in France, but while Corsica is French, it’s actually closer to Italy. The island produces some wines that are not comparable to any other wines in the world, and you will rarely find their wines in the United States.

The island is formed by rugged granite slopes and has a variety of soils. The Mediterranean winds sweep over the island in all directions. Some winds can be cold and some warm. The island is mountainous in the middle with beautiful beaches surrounding it. You will find vineyards on almost all of the mountainous areas, their grapes shaped by this unique climate.

Domaine Maestracci’s vineyards are on the island’s northern coast and are organically farmed. The wine has Niellucciu and Sciaccarellu varietals, red Italian grapes grown primarily in Corsica and are the same as Sangiovese, along with Grenache and Syrah. The grapes for this wine are grown on the vineyard’s oldest plots of lands. The wine is aged for a year in barrels and then another year in the bottle.

The wine is a beautiful dark cherry color, and you will find notes of spice and herbs on the nose. As it opens up you will taste the red fruit of raspberry and tart cherry as well as a hint of blueberry. Tannins are definitely prevalent but silky. This wine would pair well with chicken parmigiana, mussels in red sauce or a dish of baked ziti.

I love the stories behind every wine and this one is definitely a unique one. Having that southern Rhone flavor as well as Italian wine characteristics.
