This Gypsum 2017 wine is from Kuhlman Cellars in Fredericksburg, Texas and is located on the Fredericksburg 290 Wine Trail. Buddy and I first tried this blended red wine at Kuhlman’s wine pairing, and I recommend both the wine and the pairing experience.
About Kuhlman Cellars
Kuhlman Cellars is a fun place to go, and I would highly recommend trying the wine pairing experience when you visit. It is one of the best food pairings in Fredericksburg. The wine and food pairing experience is 45 minutes long with small bites prepared by their chef. You will enjoy 5 wines paired with the bites as well as a sampling of their herbed almonds.
During the wine pairing, a sommelier will educate you about each of the wines. You will have plenty of opportunities to ask questions about the wines and pairings as well.
After the wine and food pairing, you can enjoy one of their wines, as they have both indoor and outdoor seating.
Kuhlman Cellars also has a little bistro where you can enjoy a light lunch with your wine. They have gourmet sandwiches, charcuterie boards, and snacks. The cellars recommend making reservations to save a table ahead of time, and their entrees are available in limited quantities.
Gypsum 2017 Wine Review
One of the wines that we enjoyed at Kuhlman Cellars was the Gypsum. It is an easy drinking wine that is well rounded. As you hold up a glass, you can see its beautiful ruby color. It is ranked in the top 10 wines from the Texas High Plains region and has won multiple awards, including a silver medal from the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.
Gypsum is a red blend from the Texas High Plains consisting of 35% Grenache, 25% Tempranillo, 24% Merlot, 12% Mourvedre, and 4% Carignan. The wine spent 30 months in French Oak barrels.
Gypsum is a fruit forward wine with soft tannins. It is floral on the nose with tasting notes of dried bing cherries and pomegranate. I would definitely pair this with a Black Forest Cake.
I hope you get a chance to visit Kuhlman Cellars and enjoy a bottle of Gypsum and either their food pairing experience, Bistro, or both.
