Let me introduce you to your new favorite iced coffee cocktail–the Dirty Horchata. I first tried this drink thanks to a friend, who brought it to a cocktail party, and I knew I had to share it with you.
This cocktail has the cozy cinnamon and coffee flavors of autumn, but it’s served over ice, which is perfect for those warm Texas fall days between cold fronts where you still want to be in a festive mood.
To make a Dirty Horchata, you’ll need horchata, cold brew coffee concentrate, and Kraken rum, plus cinnamon sugar and cinnamon sticks to garnish.
What is horchata?
If you’re never had (or even heard of) horchata, it’s a traditional Mexican drink made from rice, milk, and cinnamon. It’s very refreshing and comforting. Making your own horchata is a fairly straightforward process.
You’ll need to plan ahead, though, since you need to soak rice and cinnamon in water for at least four hours. (Be sure to thoroughly wash your rice first!)
After soaking the rice, you’ll blend it and strain it until you’re left with the liquid. Then you’ll add evaporated and condensed milk. Follow step-by-step instructions here.
However, if you’re uncertain about this part of the drink, you could easily find a carton of horchata at Whole Foods (surprisingly, HEB didn’t have any). It just won’t be quite as good.
How do you make cold brew coffee concentrate?
This part of the recipe is much easier to find–Starbucks makes a cold brew coffee concentrate that can easily be found at HEB. However, if you love your coffee, it’s easy to make at home with your favorite coffee beans.
To make your own cold brew coffee concentrate, add 1 cup water and ½ cup coarsely ground coffee beans to a bowl and cover in the fridge for 12-20 hours. The longer you cold brew the coffee, the stronger and more bitter the concentrate will be
Strain the coffee through a mesh strainer lined with two coffee filters. Use a spoon to stir the grounds to help the concentrate come through and to push the last dregs out of the grounds at the end.
There you have it! Now you have all the components needed to make this craft cocktail. Simply add the ingredients over ice to a glass rimmed with cinnamon sugar along with a shot (or two) of Kraken rum, and enjoy!
